Global molybdenum production rises as use falls in Q3

The International Molybdenum Association (IMOA) shows that global production of molybdenum rose while usage fell in the Q3 of 2019 when compared to the Q2 of the same year. 

Global production of molybdenum rose by 1% to 143.9 million pounds (mlbs) when compared to the previous quarter of 2019, a 4% rise when compared to the same quarter of last year.

China remained the largest user at 53.6 mlbs, a 4% decrease when compared to the previous quarter but a 6% decrease when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Europe remained the second largest user at 30.2 mlbs, and a 16% drop when compared to the previous quarter and an 11% drop when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Molybdenum use in the USA fell to 13.7 mlbs, a 2% fall when compared to the previous quarter and a 7% fall when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Japan saw a 9% decrease in its usage to 13.3 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter, a 6% fall when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
