A properly structured procurement strategy is a key element for success in any industry, but especially in oil and gas. In the past few decades, procurement has grown to become a specific task for dedicated officials and departments. Recently Stainless Steel World spoke to Edwin Prinse from IV-Oil & Gas what constitutes a successful procurement strategy.

As Procurement Manager, Mr Prinse leads around thirty people, including buyers, expeditors and inspectors. He personally has over 30 years of experience in procurement.
“Successful execution of procurement activities requires a commercial attitude, technical awareness and an ability to work with strict deadlines and budgets. Getting the best value for money is a skill. Engineering companies are increasingly recognising this and subsequently the importance of the role of the procurement department is growing,” Mr Prinse states. “In my opinion, the talent required to be a procurement professional needs to come naturally. However, although one can have the flair and ambition to be a top-notch buyer, it is very important to be educated in order to develop procurement skills to the next level. Nowadays you can actually obtain an academic degree in procurement.”

The core business of Iv-Oil & Gas - based in Papendrecht, the Netherlands - is the oil and gas industry, both onshore and offshore. Mr Prinse also explains that the term ‘offshore’ no longer necessarily implies an oil and gas angle. “We are regularly invited by large players in the offshore wind industry to execute the engineering activities for their wind platforms, as these platforms show a large degree of similarity with those of the oil and gas industry. There is still a platform and there is still a jacket. The major difference is that there is no oil or gas involved, but wind energy. These are interesting projects, as clients rely on our existing offshore knowledge and appreciate our complete package abilities.”
